Pecans may not be America’s favorite nut...yet (that honor goes to almonds). But if you ask Georgia pecan growers, they’d likely argue pecans are quickly moving up the list. That’s because as consumers have become more aware of the health benefits of pecans, sales have reached record highs. Given today is National Pecan Day (yes, even pecans deserve a day of celebration), we decided to get smart about these nuts -- err, drupes, to be exact.
It’s easy to understand why shoppers are popping more pecans in their carts. They’re a great source of nutrients, minerals, antioxidants and vitamins like oleic acid, iron, beta carotene and vitamin E. And when added to a healthy diet they help decrease LDL cholesterol while increasing HDL cholesterol.
This got us wondering: Are manufacturers helping promote these good-for-you benefits on packaging? The Label Insight product data engine was quick to deliver answers. Of the 186 pecan nut and snack products sold in grocery stores, 42 percent include a “percent daily value” claim, while only 2 percent make a cholesterol-related claim, 1 percent include some sort of antioxidant claim, and none include claims about vitamin or mineral content.
Looks like there’s some room for brands to further educate shoppers about the the benefits of pecans.
