Today is National Peanut Lovers’ Day so it seems fitting that we go nuts with this week’s DataBite. Peanuts are everyone’s favorite legume and it’s easy to understand why. They have more protein, niacin, folate and phytosterols than any other nut. And they taste darn good, too.
At Label Insight, peanut butter is our fave way to enjoy these little legumes. Chunky, smooth, fresh ground, we’re equal opportunity peanut butter lovers. And we’re not alone. According to Statista, 91 percent of American households use peanut butter.
Peanut butter is big business, so we got to thinking: What peanut butter blends are dominating grocery store shelves? A quick search on Label Insight’s product data engine revealed there are 695 peanut butter products sold in grocery stores. Here’s the sticky scoop on what else you’ll find inside…
You’re most likely to find peanut butter blended with salt (79 percent), sugars (58 percent), hydrogenated vegetable oil (37 percent) and molasses (35 percent). (Interestingly, 1 percent of peanut butters include chili or cocoa. Mmm.) For those who like to keep it simple, 10 percent of peanut butters are made with peanuts only.
